Festival of Lights in Highlands County

The lighting of the lights is a thing to behold at the annual Festival of Lights on the north lawn of Florida Hospital in Sebring. The festival begins after Thanksgiving in november, with opening performances by local school and community choruses singing seasonal music, as well as refreshments and a visit by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. After the opening ceremonies, the area is suddenly transformed into a wonderland as millions of lights come to life at once on the north lawn in a huge holiday display. holiday themes include illuminated Santas, sleighs and reindeer, gingerbread couples and much more. The festival and holiday display is a joint effort by the hospital and Ridge Area Arc. The display is lit every night during the holiday season. Admission to the event is a donation to the Arc.

Highlands County Veterans Host Patriotic Holidays

Local veterans organizations host a number of events during patriotic holidays each year in Highlands County. Members of these organizations can always be seen in parades celebrating patriotism on the Fourth of July, instructing students in flag folding, flag raising and flag burning and selling poppies to raise money for veterans on memorial and Veterans days. Veterans also join with other organizations such as the Elks, Moose adn Eagles clubs for flag raisings and celebratory dinners, breakfasts and programs to commemorate the day. Besides all these things, veterans support the Jr. ROTC program in the schools and sponsor essay contests on patriotic subjects with the winner warded a scholarship to further his or her education. Highlands County veterans are an active and dynamic force in the community.
